The Open Ontario Plan
Introduced in the March 2010 Throne Speech, the McGuinty government’s Open Ontario Plan is a five-year plan for jobs and growth.
A major component of the plan, and one that is of particular interest to youth, is the substantial investment the government is making in postsecondary education. As the Premier says, 70 percent of new jobs in Ontario will require postsecondary education, and so we have to invest in training our workforce.
In the Speech from the Throne, Premier McGuinty announced that Ontario will increase the number of spaces in colleges and universities by 20,000. That’s the equivalent of a whole new University of Guelph.
But we also recognise that not every young person who pursues postsecondary training chooses university or college. That’s why the McGuinty government will continue to support the 120,000 people currently participating in apprenticeships.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Premier McGuinty announced that the government will begin consultations with its partners in education to develop a new five-year plan for postsecondary education.
If you’re interested in the future of postsecondary education in Ontario (and ultimately, the future of our economy), there is no better time to become involved in the Ontario Young Liberals. We want you to be a part of this process — we want you to have a seat at the table.
